These aren’t dream cars. These are the ones that actually show up to work when it’s ten below, the salt is eating everything, and the alley looks like a frozen crime scene. Stuff I see in the fleet, on 35th, and parked crooked outside the Music Box. Not perfect. Just dependable in the way a slightly noisy lifter is dependable. You hear it. You note it. You keep driving. But what do I know.

Ford Crown Victoria P71Old police sedan4.6L V8Drives like a couch on parole. If it had rust-proof frames, I’d run a whole fleet of nothing else.
Toyota Camry (2007–2011)Mid-size sedan2.4L I4 or 3.5L V6The human resources of cars. Boring, reliable, somehow still here after everyone else burned out.
Honda Civic (2006–2011)Compact commuter1.8L I4Takes Chicago potholes like a champ until someone forgets oil is a fluid, not a rumor.
Chevrolet Express 3500Heavy work van4.8L or 6.0L V8Drives like a refrigerator full of bricks. But when something absolutely has to get there, this ugly box shows up.
Ford F-150 (2011–2014)Full-size pickup3.5L EcoBoost V6 or 5.0L V8Half the job sites in the city are held together by one of these and a guy named Tony with a cigarette.
Subaru Outback (2010–2014)AWD wagon2.5L H4Owned by people who say they ‘don’t really drive much’ and then rack up 240k miles to Wisconsin and back.
Jeep Cherokee XJOld-school SUV4.0L I6Rusts like it’s a hobby, but that 4.0 will still fire after two polar vortexes and a missed oil change… or three.
Chevrolet Impala (2006–2013)Fleet sedan3.5L or 3.9L V6Your uncle, every city department, and half the South Side have all abused one. Most of them are still running. Somehow.
