This is the running log of beers I end up with after promising myself I’ll “try something new tonight”. It’s a mix of old reliables, sneaky sessionables, and the odd hoppy slap in the face. Mostly things you’ll spot in decent Dublin pubs without needing a treasure map – the kind of list you pull up when your friend is hovering at the bar, panicking, and you’re shouting “just get one of these, you’ll live” over the noise.

NameStyleABVMy take
Guinness DraughtIrish dry stout4.2%Default setting. If the pub looks a bit sus, I order Guinness and let nitrogen do the heavy lifting while I assess my life choices.
Hop House 13 LagerHoppy lager4.1%For when I want bubbles and a bit of hop noise but don’t fancy committing to a full-on IPA argument.
Smithwick’s Irish Red AleIrish red ale3.8%Soft, malty, very ‘I have work tomorrow’. Great when you’re in the mood for pints but not for consequences.
O’Hara’s Irish Pale AlePale ale5.2%What I order when the tap list starts showing off. Solid bitterness, a bit of caramel, and suddenly I’m talking too much about malt profiles.
Porterhouse Plain PorterPorter / stout-adjacent4.2%Like Guinness’s bookish cousin who lives in the stacks and occasionally wins awards. Lovely roast, very ‘one more and then we’ll go’ material.
Whiplash RolloverSession IPA3.8%All the citrusy hop drama, none of the falling asleep on the Nitelink. Ideal ‘I swear I’m pacing myself’ beer.
Wicklow Wolf Elevation Pale AleAmerican pale ale4.8%Juicy, a bit grapefruity, and dangerously easy to drink. The one that turns a ‘quick one after work’ into ‘oh no, it’s 11pm’.
The White Hag Little FawnSession IPA4.2%Tiny deer, big hops. Great fridge beer at home, even better on tap when you want flavour but still need to remember your Leap card PIN.
Kinnegar Scraggy BayIPA5.3%My ‘I’m treating myself’ IPA. Clean, bright, just bitter enough to remind you you’re an adult with opinions.
O’Hara’s Irish StoutIrish dry stout4.3%When I’m stout-curious but not in a Guinness mood. Roastier, a bit more bite, like the indie version of the big black pint.
