Grounds worth the walk

A list compiled chiefly for my own reference, as I seem forever to be mislaying it before the season starts. These are the London venues I still think worth the bus fare, the queue, and the inevitable overpriced half of bitter. I make no claims to objectivity, having kept a scorebook at Lord's since before some of these stadiums had sponsors' names bolted to them, but what do I know.

1Lord's Cricket GroundCricketSt John's Wood Road, LondonLondonThe Pavilion still insists on a tie and jacket, which I consider entirely correct. A proper way to spend a summer afternoon, assuming the weather cooperates, which it rarely does.
2The Kia OvalCricketKennington Oval, LondonLondonSouth of the river, which some of my neighbours treat as a foreign expedition. The gasholder view has rather more character than most modern stands manage.
3Wimbledon (All England Club)TennisChurch Road, Wimbledon, LondonLondonThe strawberries are overpriced and the queue is a national institution in its own right. I attend rarely, but always leave feeling the better for it.
4Wembley StadiumFootballWembley, LondonLondonVast, loud, and not entirely my temperament, though the arch does make for a handsome skyline. I go when duty or a grandson insists.
