If I’m not in class or arguing about econ graphs, I’m probably on the Red Line headed to a venue. Chicago’s the one city where you can catch doom metal, deep-cut jazz, and a dusty Afrobeat LP all in the same day if you plan the transfers right. This is my current rotation of spots I actually go to—places where the sound hits, the crowds don’t make me hate humanity, and I can still make the last Blue Line back toward UIC if I sprint a little.

Green Mill Cocktail LoungeUptownJazz club4802 N Broadway St, Chicago, IL 60640ChicagoFeels like time-travel with a cover charge. Get there early, keep your voice down, let the horns cook.
Empty BottleUkrainian VillageIndie rock bar venue1035 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60622ChicagoWhere you go to see a band you’ve never heard of and brag about it later. Always a little grimy, always worth it.
MetroWrigleyvilleMid-size concert hall3730 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60613ChicagoIf a band’s about to blow up, they pass through here first. Feels big but still like you might run into them at 7-Eleven after.
Lincoln HallLincoln ParkClub venue2424 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60614ChicagoClean sound, good sightlines, and somehow still not corny. Like Metro’s nerdy cousin who actually did their reading.
Thalia HallPilsenHistoric theater venue1807 S Allport St, Chicago, IL 60608ChicagoLooks like you’re seeing a show inside a mansion. Great when you want your gig AND your Instagram to go crazy.
The Salt ShedGoose Island / West TownIndoor–outdoor concert venue1357 N Elston Ave, Chicago, IL 60642ChicagoSummer shows here hit different. River breeze, skyline, and you’re somehow sweating and freezing at the same time.
Jazz ShowcaseSouth Loop / Printer’s RowJazz club806 S Plymouth Ct, Chicago, IL 60605ChicagoTextbook jazz room. Feels like extra credit for music history, except you pay in two-drink minimums instead of tuition.
Sleeping VillageAvondaleBar and music venue3734 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60618ChicagoCoffee in the morning, metal at night. Perfect spot to pretend you’re productive before the amps turn on.
