This isn't some syllabus, it's just the paperbacks I keep pressing into people's hands at the bar or on the A train platform at 207th. Some of these I've read three, four times, spine cracked all to hell, coffee rings on the cover. Doesn't matter if it's a novel or a doorstop of nonfiction, what matters is it gets the city right, gets the specific weird music of it, not the postcard version. Grab one, ride the train past your stop, that's how you know it's good.

4The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan LethemThe Fortress of Solitude, Jonathan LethemBrooklyn before it got expensive, comic books, graffiti, a superhero ring that may or may not work. Nails that specific ache of watching your old block change under you. If you're into coming-of-age stories with a little bit of the fantastic slipped in, t
5Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerneyBright Lights, Big City, Jay McInerneySecond person narration, cocaine, a fact-checking job falling apart, all very eighties Manhattan, but the hangover of it feels timeless if you've ever had a rough Sunday after a rough Saturday. Short enough to finish in a weekend. If you're into stylish n
