Somewhere between dissertation panic and the away end at the Etihad I keep tripping over papers that stick with me way longer than they should. This is the stack I've actually finished cover to cover, annotated to death, and then bored my flatmates about over tea afterwards. Political theory classics, the football analytics rabbit hole I fell into after one baffling City performance, and a couple of first-year mind-benders I never quite let go of. No paywalled nonsense you can't actually get to either, I checked every one.

Name	Title	Author(s)	Field	Year	Why it's on here
Power: A Radical View	Power: A Radical View (Three Faces of Power)	Steven Lukes	Political Theory	1974	Read it before a seminar on ideology and every group project I've ever suffered through suddenly made horrible sense. The third face is the one that actually keeps me up.
Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital	Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital	Robert D. Putnam	Political Science	1995	The original journal essay, before the book got fat. Explains why nobody joins societies anymore, which honestly explains half my seminar attendance too.
The Strength of Weak Ties	The Strength of Weak Ties	Mark Granovetter	Sociology	1973	Turns out the bloke you vaguely know from a gig is more useful for job tips than your actual mates. Deeply useful, mildly depressing.
Two Faces of Power	Two Faces of Power	Peter Bachrach and Morton S. Baratz	Political Science	1962	The one Lukes is arguing against basically the whole time. Read this first or the Lukes paper reads like he's shadowboxing.
Making Democracy Work	Making Democracy Work: Civic Traditions in Modern Italy	Robert D. Putnam, Robert Leonardi, Raffaella Y. Nanetti	Comparative Politics	1993	Twenty years of Italian regional governments turned into one of the most quoted books in my whole reading list. Slow burn but the payoff's worth it.
Expected Goals in Football: Improving Model Performance and Demonstrating Value	Expected Goals in Football: Improving Model Performance and Demonstrating Value	Various football analytics researchers	Sports Analytics	2023	Found this during a procrastination spiral after City somehow lost a game they had about 4 xG in. Turns out the stat's more defensible than most pundits give it credit for.
The Expected Goals Philosophy	The Expected Goals Philosophy	James Tippett	Sports Analytics	2019	Not exactly a journal paper but reads like one and started half the arguments I now have with mates about whether xG is 'real football knowledge'.
The Strength of Weak Ties: A Network Theory Revisited	The Strength of Weak Ties: A Network Theory Revisited	Mark Granovetter	Sociology	1983	Granovetter's own follow-up defending himself against critics. Petty in the best academic way. I live for a good footnote scrap.
Legitimacy and the Problem of Consent	Legitimacy and the Problem of Consent	David Beetham	Political Theory	1991	Underrated compared to the big names. Explains why some governments limp on despite everyone hating them, which feels relevant most weeks.
