The list of things I send my foreigner friends when they ask me "what should I do in Rio?".
It's based on my lifestyle and what I think it's an authentic and pleasant experience.
There ate very few places in the world where a sports event take such epic stance. The passion of the crowd roars diffetently here. If you enjoy big collective experiences, ita an unforgettable experience.
Of course what I described here is amplifyed when it's an important match from one of the big local teams (Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense or Botafogo). Try to catch one of those. You can buy tickets online and in advance. No need to hire a tour or buy tickets or arrange transportation with a travel agency, unless you lean on the fancy side. Subway is right there at the West entrance - it can get crowded but it can also be a fun experience.
A stample on simple "carioca" food and experience. Lines can get long for a table on "after beach" hours, but
ines can get long for a table on "after beach" hours, but you can have beer and food while you wait outside which is part of the lyfestile. Despite being meat-focused, vegetarians can be happy there just feasting on the side dishes.
It's a trully unique experience, just to look and sample the diversity of brazilian's "farmers markets", to stock up on produce and much more, and, most importantly, to listen to live music (samba and choro) while sipping beers and drinks - or AMAZING fresh squeezed juices.
The vendors are there every saturday from very early morning until around 1pm. The music happens around lunch time (12pm I think) and last no more than 2h
Among the Michelin stared restaurants in Rio, this is one I think it's worthy by its inventive menu and great execution.
They can cater to vegetarian and vegans if you let them know. Reservation recommended. I particuraly think that the ambiance could be more charming, but the food compensates. The wine selection is great too. Would go for the wine pairing and the smaller version (4 main dishes vs 6, I think)
A recent happening (maybe 2y young), and absolutellys a must go. a sunset vibe by the ocean, with a big ska band. Some music star have made surprise apearences to chelc it out, but you should go there for the music and vibe itself.
They alternate location between Leme and Arpoador and time might change with season, so check their IG.
