These are the shops where I actually spend my check — the ones within walking distance of the Reg, or a short Metra hop for when I need a change of stacks. Think of this as the annotated margin of my library card: where to browse on a Sunday after jazz brunch, where to argue with my book club's other half about whether a novel stuck the landing, and where the staff know enough to talk you out of a bad impulse buy. Fair warning, I will always choose the store with a cat or a reading nook over one with better lighting.
