These are the beers that keep sneaking back into my life like full-backs bombing on in the 88th minute. A mix of Manchester lifers and local glory-hunters: stuff I’ll always order if I spot it on cask, cans I pretend are “for the weekend” and then open on a Tuesday, and a couple of big hitters for when United have either ruined my day or weirdly improved it. Nothing here is hypothetical – these are the ones I actually drink, argue about, and bore my mates with while we’re wedged between Old Trafford and the Northern Quarter.

Marble PintMarble Beers, ManchesterSession golden ale3.9%Cask, ideally at the pubThe Marble Arch or any bar nerdy enough to keep it well-conditionedLight, crisp, gently citrus, proper bitter snapSalted crisps, long moans about xG9/10My default setting. If Pint’s on, I don’t overthink it – it’s the neatly‑tuned midfield of beers: just does everything right without showboating.
Marble LagondaMarble Beers, ManchesterPale, old-school IPA5.0–5.2% rangeCask first, keg if I mustMarble Arch, Café Beermoth, random cask lines about townCitrus peel, floral, firm chewy bitternessPie, gravy, and questionable refereeing decisions8/10Feels like the bit in a gig when the band finally play the song you actually came for – classic, loud, slightly nostalgic, and exactly what you wanted.
Runaway Pale AleThe Runaway Brewery, Stockport / ManchesterPale aleAround 4.5%Cask in the taproom, bottles at homeRunaway taproom and garden, decent bottle shopsBalanced citrus, light malt, clean bitternessSnacks, spreadsheets, midweek football on mute7/10Feels like that quietly consistent full‑back who never makes Match of the Day but always gets a 7/10 – reliable, unfussy, and you notice it when it’s missing.
Runaway IPAThe Runaway Brewery, Stockport / ManchesterModern British IPAAround 5.5%Bottle or kegRunaway taproom, indie bars that care about cask and keg listsBold hop aroma, citrus and pine, firm bitternessLoaded burgers and VAR rants8/10This is my ‘I’m staying for one more’ IPA. Big enough to feel like an occasion, still balanced enough that I can read my train times afterwards… mostly.
Seven Bro7hers Honeycomb PaleSEVEN BRO7HERS Brewing Co, SalfordFlavoured pale ale4.0%Cold cans, sometimes kegSeven Bro7hers bars, supermarket shelves, mates’ fridgesHoneycomb sweetness, toffee edges, gentle bitternessDesserts, film nights, beer‑curious visitors6/10Not an every‑game starter, more like the flair sub you bring on when the night needs a bit of chaos. Weird on paper, strangely addictive in reality.
Joseph Holt Two Hoots Golden AleJoseph Holt, ManchesterGolden ale4.2%Cask, proper Holt’s pub atmosphereHolt’s locals across Greater ManchesterGolden, citrusy, light fruit, gentle bitternessFish and chips, pub quizzes, old terrace stories7/10This is heritage data – a link back to when ‘craft’ meant the landlord knew how to look after his cellar. Easy going, slightly nostalgic, and unfairly underrated.
Cloudwater I Have Become The BoatCloudwater Brew Co, ManchesterDDH IPA7.0%Fresh cans only, no ageing like it’s a BordeauxCloudwater taproom, specialist bottle shopsBig tropical and stone fruit, juicy, soft, a bit dankVictory laps, new album releases, late‑night tactics talk9/10This is the ‘cup final’ beer – not for every night, but when it’s on form it reminds you why you fell in love with this ridiculous hobby in the first place.
