My Manchester TV shelf, basically: stories that live somewhere between the tram stop and the cheap seats at the Etihad. These are the shows I put on when I want streets that look like home, pubs that feel suspiciously familiar and characters who absolutely would side‑eye you on the 142 bus. Call it a little love letter to the way this city keeps sneaking onto screen, from cobbles and council estates to Canal Street at 3am. [Yes, I have more opinions than is strictly necessary; no, I’m not stopping.]

Coronation StreetSoap opera1960Everyday melodrama on a northern back streetLike living inside your nan’s favourite paperback: weddings, rows and daft schemes, all within staggering distance of the Rovers. I dip in and out, but the comfort is knowing it’s always still going without me.ITV1 / ITVX
Shameless (UK)Comedy drama2004Chaotic council‑estate saga with a filthy grinFeels like someone novelised a wild night out in Gorton and then accidentally left all the swearing in. Messy, loud, oddly tender – like a family saga where everyone’s allergic to boundaries.Channel 4 / streaming on Channel 4 online
Queer as Folk (UK)LGBTQ+ drama1999Turn‑of‑the‑millennium hedonism with feelingsPlays like a very specific, very glittery coming‑of‑age novel set entirely between pre‑drinks and the kebab shop. A bit dated now, but the Canal Street energy still crackles.Channel 4 / various UK streamers
Cold FeetComedy drama1997Relationship epic with Manchester as the backdropIf you’ve ever over‑analysed a text message, this is basically group therapy. Grown‑up friendships, bad decisions, and occasional sobbing into a takeaway – like a long, chatty novel you keep re‑reading in different decades.ITV1 / ITVX / BritBox
