After-work haunts

These are the spots where spreadsheets finally give way to pint glasses and half-baked stock pitches. All within easy striking distance of the City, all road-tested after earnings calls that ran long, and more than a few Sunday nights that absolutely wrecked my thesis on how weekends are meant to be restful. Nothing here is ‘the next big thing’ – just reliable places to debrief the market, argue about xG, and overpay for fries with colleagues you inexplicably like.

1The Counting HouseGrand city pubPost-close debriefs that turn into dinnerIf you like your pints with a side of faux-Victorian balance-sheet energy, this former bank is dangerously on the nose for equity people.50 Cornhill, London EC3V 3PDLondon
2Lamb TavernHistoric market pubSummer pints under the Leadenhall roofFeels like the entire insurance market’s after-work canteen; noisy, chaotic, oddly comforting – like results day in a good year.10-12 Leadenhall Market, London EC3V 1LRLondon
3The ArbitragerCraft beer barQuick one-beer catch-ups near BankTiny, focused, and does one thing well – basically the quality small-cap of City beer bars.27A Throgmorton Street, London EC2N 2ANLondon

7Ye Olde Cheshire CheeseLabyrinthine heritage pubWinter pints and deep-value debatesDark, wonky, full of stairs and history – basically the pub equivalent of a 100-page initiation note on a stock no one covers anymore.145 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2BPLondon
8Ye Olde Cock TavernTraditional Fleet Street pubQuick one before the trainNarrow, busy and straight to the point – ideal when you’ve got exactly 27 minutes before a delayed Elizabeth line rescue mission.22 Fleet Street, London EC4Y 1AALondon
9The AnthologistModern bar and kitchenTeam drinks that might involve sharing platesA bit glossy, a bit loud, but reliably good for when half the team wants cocktails and the other half is still pretending beer is a ‘macro hedge’.58 Gresham Street, London EC2V 7BBLondon
10The Lord AberconwayCity corner pubLiverpool Street link-ups before a trainClassic post-desk-close spot – packed, a bit rough around the edges, and great for one last pint you’ll definitely regret in tomorrow’s 8am meeting.72 Old Broad Street, London EC2M 1QTLondon
