When the wind comes screaming off the lake and your car won’t start, you don’t need inspiration. You need something boiling, salty, and vaguely medicinal. These are the spots I actually get off the couch for. Nothing fancy, nothing ‘elevated.’ Just bowls that put you back on the road… for a while, anyway. Strong opinions below, but what do I know.

Things in a hot bowl — 4 items
Name	Address	City	My take
1Strings Ramen Shop Chinatown	2141 S Archer Ave, Chicago, IL 60616	Chicago	When it’s February in your bones, their tonkotsu hits like fresh coolant. Loud, cramped, always a line, and absolutely worth it for a bowl that’ll fog up your glasses and your bad mood.
2XOCO	445 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60654	Chicago	Their caldos are basically Mexican performance art in a bowl. Rich, smoky, lots going on under the hood. You wait in line with tourists, then remember why you still come here anyway.
3Pho 777	1104 W Argyle St, Chicago, IL 60640	Chicago	Big bowl, bigger plate of herbs, broth that smells like it’s fixed more colds than Walgreens. Slurp quietly, watch Broadway traffic crawl by, reconsider every sad canned-soup decision you’ve ever made.
4Kasia’s Deli	2101 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622	Chicago	Polish soups that hug you like an old parka. Cabbage, beet, whatever’s in the pot—doesn’t matter, it sticks to your ribs and your work shirt. Feels like stopping by your babcia’s house, if she took credit cards.
