Julie Hesmondhalgh is everywhere right now: Olivier in the bag for Punch, keynote slots at theatre conferences, and popping up in every other arts panel my LinkedIn insists I care about. As someone who thinks in cap tables, I started noticing the ‘cap table’ of people around her – the writers, directors, execs and fellow nerds quietly compounding the value of London theatre. This is my little watchlist of humans in her orbit who’ve made me rethink how good a night at the theatre (or a lunchtime panel) can actually be. Not exhaustive, just the ones who’ve recently elbowed their way into my mental portfolio and absolutely wrecked my thesis that I was going to spend fewer evenings in dark rooms this year.

1Julie HesmondhalghJulie HesmondhalghThe centre of the whole web; actor, narrator, activist.Coronation Street years ago, then Punch in the West End and her keynote chatter about arts and access.Olivier-winning supporting actor who can swing from political theatre to popular TV and still sound genuinely curious, not grand.Feels like the rare ‘blue-chip’ actor who still behaves like a scrappy growth stock – keeps taking interesting, slightly risky projects instead of coasting.
2Jordan FeinJordan FeinDirected Punch, shaping the production that put her in every Olivier prediction thread going.West End programmes and post-show bar debates about how the staging managed to be punchy without feeling flashy for the sake of it.Quietly building a reputation for productions that are stylised but still let actors like Julie do detailed, human work. One of those directors whose name on a flyer now moves me from ‘maybe’ to ‘fine, I’ll pay full price and skip one takeaway this month.’
3James GrahamJames GrahamPlaywright of Punch, which netted her that recent Olivier and a lot of breathless lobby chat.Started with This House and political plays, then suddenly I’m watching his work again because Julie’s name is on the cast list.Has basically cornered the market on turning recent British politics and scandals into sharp, sell-out drama. If Graham writes it and Julie signs on, I assume the risk-reward ratio is heavily skewed in my favour; I book early and sort the spreadsheets later.
