My active comfort zones

When the market’s closed and my brain is still running a full-court press, I default to sports. These are the places I cycle through like asset classes: some are pure spectacle, some are where I pretend I still have a first step, and some are just glorified ways to justify extra carbs. Mix of arenas, outdoor courts, and oddly calming industrial river views. Think of it as my personal ETF of New York sweat, from pickup hoops to US Open-adjacent tennis daydreams.

1Madison Square Garden4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY 10001New York, NYThe blue-chip of local sports venues: overpriced, overhyped, and still somehow worth it the second you walk into a Knicks game and feel the collective, irrational hope in the building.
2Chelsea Piers Golf Club59 Chelsea Piers, New York, NY 10011New York, NYDriving balls into the Hudson is the closest I get to meditation. It’s basically a climate-controlled spreadsheet for your swing, with launch monitors instead of line items.
3Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers61 Chelsea Piers, New York, NY 10011New York, NYCold air, echoing skate sounds, and the faint fear of falling on a first date—this is my preferred way to remember I’m a land mammal with mediocre edges.
4Pier 2 Roller Rink, Brooklyn Bridge Park150 Furman St, Pier 2, Brooklyn, NY 11201Brooklyn, NYGliding in circles with the skyline staring you down is peak New York cardio. Feels like doing laps inside a screensaver, with better people-watching and worse balance.
5Randall’s Island Park Athletic Fields10 Central Road, New York, NY 10035New York, NYIf you’ve ever wanted to play on what feels like an institutional-scale portfolio of turf fields, this is it. Windy, sprawling, and wildly satisfying on a clear day.
6USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis CenterFlushing Meadows–Corona Park, Flushing, NY 11368Flushing, NYDuring the US Open it’s a live candlestick chart of momentum swings; the rest of the year it’s where I rent a court and pretend the muffled train noise is a roaring crowd.
