I spend my weekdays designing things that beep reassuringly inside people, then my weekends around things that make a much less reassuring noise outside them. These are the places I actually go when I want to look at interesting metal, hear too many revs, or remind myself why torque curves are more fun than PowerPoint curves. None of this is sponsored, algorithmic or particularly sensible – just the spots that have consistently delivered good machinery and decent coffee, in roughly that order.

Ace Cafe LondonHistoric motor cafe and meet spotAce Corner, North Circular Road, Stonebridge, London NW10 7UD, United KingdomLondonLoud evenings, themed meets, and watching everything from rat rods to pristine classics roll inIf you’ve ever wanted to experience what a carburettor sounds like when it’s trying its best, come here on a busy night. It’s chaotic, noisy, and somehow still manages to get your fry-up to the table faster than most hospitals process blood tests.
Classic ChromeClassic and sports car specialist12 Sheen Lane, London SW14 8LN, United KingdomLondonUsable classics you could realistically daily if you hate yourself just a littleMore ‘I could maybe just about own this’ than ‘I need a private banker’. Lots of honest-looking metal, and you can actually imagine fixing half of it with tools you own rather than a laptop you don’t.
Duke of LondonClassic and supercar hub with coffee and eventsCorson Yard, The Brentford Riviera, Brentford TW8 8GS, United KingdomBrentfordLaid-back classic car culture, coffee, and the odd dangerously tempting for-sale signFeels like someone built a cool riverside village for people who can’t stop buying old cars. If I ever misplace a year’s salary, this is probably where it turned into another project I didn’t need.
Caffeine & Machine: The BowlCar-themed cafe, bar and meet venue1 Ampthill Road, Houghton Conquest, Bedford MK45 3JP, United KingdomHoughton ConquestRoad-trip destination meets, mixed crowds from hot hatches to hypercarsYes, it’s technically Bedfordshire, but it’s also basically a petri dish for the car-obsessed. Drive up from London, park in a field of bad financial decisions on wheels, and pretend this is all perfectly rational.
Brooklands MuseumMotor racing and aviation museumBrooklands Museum, Brooklands Drive, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 0SL, United KingdomWeybridgeEarly racing history, oddball machinery, and a reminder that people used to race in literal shedsIf you like your engineering with a side of mild terror, the old banked circuit remnants are ideal. Great place to see how far we’ve come from ‘that’ll probably hold together’ to modern crash structures.
Mercedes-Benz WorldBrand experience centre with driving circuitsBrooklands Drive, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 0SL, United KingdomWeybridgeHands-on driving experiences and pretending you’re a DTM driver for half an hourEssentially a very elaborate way for Mercedes to sell you a car, but the wet skid circle alone justifies the trip. Excellent if you want to understand understeer and oversteer without sacrificing your own bumper.
Michelin HouseHistoric tyre company HQ turned mixed-use building81 Fulham Road, London SW3 6RD, United KingdomLondonArchitectural car history, plus food and people-watchingIt’s basically a cathedral to tyres. The stained glass, tiles and Bibendum details are a nice reminder that even something as dull as rubber can be wrapped in unnecessary but delightful design.
Bluebird Chelsea (former Bluebird Garage)Restaurant and courtyard in a former motor garage350 King’s Road, London SW3 5UU, United KingdomLondonA civilised drink in a place that used to smell of petrol instead of perfumeUnderneath the cocktails and Chelsea gloss, this was once an Art Deco garage tied to the Bluebird name. It’s a nice spot to sit, squint a bit, and imagine the floor covered in oil stains instead of brunch.
