Twenty years of reading property files will wreck a man's eyes, so I go to bookstores like other guys go to the chiropractor. These are the shops in and around the city that earn repeat business, no gimmicks, just good shelves and people who know what they're selling. Rate each one same as I rate a claim: pass, fail, or exceptional.

2Boston Book Company	705 Centre St, 2nd floor	Boston (Jamaica Plain), MA 02130	By appointment only, like seeing a specialist. Worth the paperwork if you're after a real first edition and not a reprint dressed up nice.

4Harvard Book Store	1256 Massachusetts Ave	Cambridge, MA 02138	Technically Cambridge, I know. I file it anyway. New, used, remaindered, all under one roof since 1932, which beats most marriages.
