This is the slightly scruffy reading list that lives in my bag between surgeries. Mostly primary care, mostly practical, with the odd one that just makes you feel less mad for doing this job. Not a systematic anything. Just the papers I keep coming back to… anyway…

Papers that linger — 7 items
Name	Year	Topic	My take
1Clinical wisdom in primary care: more than guideline adherence	2011	How GPs actually think vs tidy guidelines	Read this on a night shift once and felt oddly seen. Reminds you that the messy bit in the middle – the judgement – is sort of the job.
2The inverse care law revisited: a continuing blot on the NHS record	2012	Inequality, deprivation and who actually gets care	Every time I get frustrated in morning clinic, this is the one that whispers: ‘It’s not just you, and it’s not just this practice.’ A brisk slap of perspective.
3Continuity of care and mortality in general practice: a systematic review and meta-analysis	2018	Seeing the same GP and not dying quite so soon	Nice when the data backs up what your 80‑year‑old patients have been telling you for decades. Shows continuity isn’t just nostalgia; it actually matters.
4The consultation and equity in primary care: patterns in multi-morbidity	2015	Multi‑morbidity, short appointments, long problems	Good for those days when everyone has at least four diagnoses and two carrier bags of meds. Helps explain why ten minutes feels like performance art.
5Safety netting in primary care: a qualitative study of GPs’ practices	2014	That awkward ‘come back if…’ bit of the consult	Made me realise safety‑netting is more than a throwaway line at the door. Changed how I explain ‘when to worry’ – especially when I’m already running 40 minutes late.
6Electronic health records and the quality of primary care: a longitudinal analysis	2016	EHRs, tick boxes and actual patient care	The paper I wave (mentally) every time the computer freezes mid‑consult. Reminds you that tech can help, but only if it’s designed for humans and not mythical perfect users.
7Social prescribing in primary care: a realist evaluation	2017	Link workers, loneliness, and things beyond pills	Nice antidote to the ‘just prescribe something’ reflex. Useful when you’re in a place like Walthamstow, where the problem is rarely just the blood pressure… anyway…
