Long weekend exits

Writing this on a fogged‑in Muni ride home, Outside Lands loading into Golden Gate Park and my sneakers still dusty from the Mission. These are the cities I daydream about when the J grinds to a halt and my burrito starts to go lukewarm — places that feel far enough from San Francisco to reset my brain, but close enough that you can sneak out on a Friday afternoon and still be at your desk(ish) on Monday. None of this is objective or complete; it’s just my personal short list of “tap out of SF for a few days before you start yelling at the Clipper machine” options.

NameRegionWhy goIdeal seasonTravel timeMy take
1PortlandPacific Northwest, USAWalkable, leafy, packed with coffee, breweries, and bookstores that don’t feel like homework.Late spring to early fall~2 hour flight from SFO/OAKFeels like San Francisco’s introvert cousin: fewer tech vests, more flannel, everybody somehow already knows your favorite roast.
2SeattlePacific Northwest, USAWater everywhere, ferries, indie music, and just enough gray sky to justify that third latte.Summer~2.5 hour flight from SFO/OAKLike if the Embarcadero got taller and moodier and everyone agreed that rain is a personality trait.
3Los AngelesSouthern California, USABeach mornings, taco nights, weird little art spaces, and that sprawling choose‑your‑own‑adventure feeling.Year‑round, but nicest in spring and fall~1.5 hour flight or long day driveEvery time I go I swear I’ll finally pick a side in the SF vs LA debate, and every time I just end up at a strip‑mall noodle spot feeling happy and confused.
4San DiegoSouthern California, USAActual warm beaches, breweries for days, and a downtown you can wander without five layers.Year‑round, especially winter escape~1.5 hour flight from SFO/OAKFeels like cheating on Ocean Beach with someone who actually returns your texts and doesn’t hit you with sideways rain.
5VancouverBritish Columbia, CanadaMountains, ocean, and city all stacked together like a very polite SimCity save file.Late spring through early fall~2.5 hour flight from SFOIf you’ve ever wished SF had cleaner trains, more bike lanes, and a whole extra mountain range, this is your fantasy spin‑off.
6Mexico CityCentral MexicoArchitecture, museums, plazas, and food that will ruin you for burritos back home for at least a week.Fall and winter~4.5 hour direct flight from SFOBig‑city energy turned up to eleven, but somehow still full of tiny neighborhood corners where you can sit with coffee and just watch life happen.
7AustinTexas, USALive music, breakfast tacos, and that specific brand of laid‑back chaos around the river.Spring and fall~3.5 hour flight from SFO/OAKLike Outside Lands decided to become a city and then got distracted halfway through by a really good guitar solo.
8ChicagoMidwest, USASerious architecture, deep‑dish debates, lakefront walks, and neighborhoods that reward wandering.Late spring to early fall~4 hour flight from SFOFeels like visiting a parallel‑universe SF that traded hills for skyscrapers and decided weather should actually have settings.
9New York CityEast Coast, USAMuseums, shows, late‑night everything, and the dopamine hit of a subway system that goes more places than your therapist.Spring and fall~5.5–6 hour flight from SFOSometimes you need to be somewhere louder than Market Street at rush hour just to remember you’re a tiny human on a very big planet.
