Not a syllabus, not a bibliography urning back into to a to-do list \u2014 just the papers I keep dragging back off the shelf like a reliever with a rubber arm. Read these in grad school, still quote them at faculty meetings, still annoy dinner guests with them. Filed here so I stop losing the PDF.

Papers I Keep Citing — 8 items
Name	Paper	Field	My take
1The Historian's Craft by Marc Bloch	The Historian's Craft (posthumous, 1949)	Historiography	Unfinished because the Gestapo shot him, which puts your late dissertation chapter in perspective.
2The Rhetoric of History by Hayden White essay	Metahistory (intro chapter)	Theory of history	White says every history book is secretly a novel with footnotes. I've never trusted a tidy narrative arc since.
3E.P. Thompson Time Work-Discipline and Industrial Capitalism	Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism	Labor history	Explains why I still feel guilty checking my phone during office hours. Clocks ruined everybody.
4Benedict Anderson Imagined Communities	Imagined Communities	Nationalism studies	Nations as shared fictions, which explains Red Sox Nation better than any marketing department ever has.
5Joan Wallach Scott Gender A Useful Category of Historical Analysis	Gender: A Useful Category of Historical Analysis	Gender history	The essay that made 'gender' a verb in every seminar room I've sat in since 2004.
6Michel-Rolph Trouillot Silencing the Past	Silencing the Past	Historiography of memory	On how archives forget on purpose. I now side-eye every museum label I read, including my own.
7Fernand Braudel The Mediterranean longue duree	The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World	Annales school	1200 pages on geography as destiny. I read it over one brutal New England winter and it felt appropriate.
8Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger The Invention of Tradition	The Invention of Tradition	Cultural history	Proof that half our 'ancient' customs are younger than the Green Monster. Comforting, honestly.
