ok so between anatomy revision and pretending i understand ECGs, live music is genuinely the only thing holding my nervous system together rn. i live in a Peckham shoebox, my student loan cries every time i buy a ticket, and my oat milk latte habit is basically a second degree at this point — but these are the London venues i'll skip sleep for, no question. ngl some of these have wrecked my hearing and my bank balance in equal measure and i'd still go back tomorrow.

O2 Academy Brixtonthe sloped floor is genuinely a hazard when you're this sleep deprived ngl but the sound in here is unreal. seen way too many big names shout 'BRIXTON!!' at me and fall for it every single time.211 Stockwell RoadLondonRock, pop, indie
Jazz Cafegrabbed a balcony table here once and felt so fancy despite having £4 left in my account. soul and funk nights hit different when you've just come off a 12 hour shift and need to feel human again.5 ParkwayLondonJazz, soul, funk
Union Chapelan actual working church that hosts gigs and honestly the acoustics are unfair. sat in a pew mid-set once and had a full emotional moment about my life choices, med school included.Compton TerraceLondonFolk, acoustic, indie
The Windmill Brixtonscrappy, loud, sticky floor, £6 entry and i've seen bands here before they got big and felt so smug about it. this is where my student loan goes to die happily.22 Blenheim GardensLondonIndie, DIY, punk
Village Undergroundthose tube carriages on the roof are so random but the club itself slaps for electronic and indie nights. danced until 2am here before a 7am ward round, zero regrets, several coffees needed after.54 Holywell LaneLondonElectronic, indie
Southbank Centremy one 'cultured' venue on this list, i wear a blazer and pretend i'm not exhausted. Royal Festival Hall views over the Thames are gorgeous and honestly a nice break from A&E energy.Belvedere RoadLondonClassical, contemporary
The Old Blue Lastupstairs pub venue that's basically a new-band lottery, sometimes it's incredible sometimes it's a mess but that's half the fun. cheap-ish pints too which as a broke med student i deeply respect.38 Great Eastern StreetLondonIndie, punk, new bands
