Every Sunday some poor sod convinces me to stand in a car park in Surrey admiring things with carburettors. I complain, then I go anyway. Here are the eleven classics that make the whole ritual worthwhile — the ones I'd trade a decent case of Burgundy for, and I don't say that lightly.

Jaguar E-Type Series 1Enzo Ferrari apparently called it the most beautiful car ever made. I won't argue with a man who built better ones, but he's not wrong here.Britain1960s
Aston Martin DB5Yes, everyone thinks of the spy films. Fine. It earned the fuss well before Hollywood turned up with a machine gun in the wing.Britain1960s
Porsche 911 2.7 RSLight, loud, and mildly terrifying at speed. A friend of mine insists it's the only car worth owning. He's insufferable about it.Germany1970s
Mercedes-Benz 300SL "Gullwing"Doors that open upward, which sounds ridiculous until you're the one climbing out of it outside a gallery in Mayfair looking terribly pleased with yourself.Germany1950s
Ferrari 250 GT LussoQuietly the most elegant Ferrari ever built, in my humble and entirely unqualified opinion. Owning one would require selling most things I own.Italy1960s
Lancia Delta IntegraleA rally legend wearing a hatchback's clothes. Utterly impractical for the school run, magnificent for absolutely everything else.Italy1980s
Land Rover Series IBuilt to plough fields, ended up ferrying the aristocracy to shooting weekends. A very British sort of social mobility.Britain1950s
MG MGBThe gateway drug of classic motoring. Cheerful, affordable, and the reason half my friends now talk about nothing else at dinner.Britain1960s
Citroën DSLooks like it arrived from the future to collect the rest of us. Rides like a cloud, baffles every mechanic who touches it.France1950s
